The Great Lakes & Iron Range is a heavy haul railroad that is immersed in the late steam era. We carry iron ore to the Great Lakes, coal to the industrial heartland, and general freight to the urban core. The railroad includes both the urban canyons of the lakeside metropolis and the rural charm of the glaciated countryside.
It takes a dispatcher, three yards with yardmaster and drill crew each, helpers, and plenty of road and switching jobs to keep this moderate-sized Class One operating at full efficiency. We use NCE DCC with NCE and WiFi throttles for train control, plus FRS radios for communications.
The scenery is 90% complete and it makes the layout worth visiting if you're in the area. It's even better when you operate on this layout. (Remember to ask about the lights when you visit.)
